Hi! I live in York, England and am a keen chess enthusiast, but still very amateurish.

I'm always looking for opponents but I am not much of a challenge for good players. My email address is avalanchian(at) and play under the handle "Avalanchian" on so feel free to contact me and ask for a game!

Microbe: team white So we going for Tarrasch, Classical or Advance (I'm not a big fan of the exchange, sorry to any exchange fans xD)?

Microbe: Can GM Gelfand really hope to draw this?
   Feb-25-11 L Zinn vs Sveshnikov, 1974
Microbe: Stunning combination here from Sveshnikov! I was only looking through games in the Sicilian Sveshnikov to get an idea of how the opening feels and learn some of the plans in the middle games. Bumping into moves like 26... Rg8 an 27... Rf7! is a wonderful bonus!

Microbe: I too got hung up on 31... Qc5+. Better than I usually do though.

Microbe: team black I have to say, I am quite taken by the lines being discussed with 9. ...Nd4. I'm thinking 8. ...0-0 for me also.
   Nov-11-08 Lasker vs S Polner, 1889 (replies)
Microbe: The first thing I saw when setting up the position on my board was the pin on the h-pawn so I instinctively tried 19. ...♘g4+. The rest (20.♔h1 ♕xh3+ 21.♗xh3 ♖h2#) sort of played itself. A pleasing little combination. I found the puzzle today slightly ...
   Nov-04-08 V Disawal vs M Anshuman, 2008 (replies)
Microbe: Well I got everything but the queen sacrifice at the end. I even had the position after 19... ♔h8 on my board and still missed it! So I backed up and figured white could still win a knight after 17... ♔h8 18.♕xe5. I really need to study mating positions a LOT. ...

Microbe: <JFQ: "hopefully we will see him fight like a rabid badger."> Tell me, how exactly does a rabid badger fight? I cannot say I have ever witnessed such a thing.

Microbe: Hello. I really enjoyed this game, but being a poor player (especially in the endgame) I don't quite understand 34.f3. Can anyone elaborate for me please? I would be most grateful. =)
