Kibitzer's Corner
May-25-09  Sem: It appears that Hans Kranki (Hamburg) finished 5th at the 'Deutsche Meisterschaft' (German Championship) in Bad Oeynhausen. At any rate he played up to 1941. I cannot find any info on him after that date.
Digging up these data gives me a sour taste, since of course no Jewish chess players participated in these tournaments. In contrast, 1925 e.g. saw Nimzowitsch, Grünfeld, Reti and Tarrasch in action, and in 1931 Jacques Mieses was the last Jew to participate for some time. And to think that this was the country that once produced Emmanuel Lasker...
May-25-09  myschkin: . . .

addendum:

"Hans Kranki, gefallen am 13. Mai 1942 in Thur (nördl. Tschudowo*)

http://www.kirchenpauer.de/037fc299...

<sem> according to the sources he died as a young soldier in summer 1942 on a battelground north of Chudovo (Russia) called "Thur" (can't figure that out, right now). If you need a proper translation let me know.

Jul-18-09  Sem: myschkin, thank you for your thoughtful addition. Makes me realize (again) that there is so much human frailness behind dry listings and statistics.
Jul-15-20  Alan McGowan: German records show Hans Kranki was born 31 March 1908 in Danzig.

His death record confirms his date of death as shown (13 May 1942) on the Wolchow Front, a major battle in the spring of 1942.
