Dec-23-08  Whitehat1963: What is the English translation of "Oystein"?
Jun-22-11  Helloween: <Whitehat1963>Closest equivalent in English would be Easton.

The name is Norse and means island stone.

Jul-05-12  Cibator: <Helloween: <Whitehat1963>Closest equivalent in English would be Easton.>

Slightly closer for spelling would be Eyston - probably pronounced the same, though I haven't been able to determine that for certain. Best-known to bear the name was George Eyston, a racing driver and holder of the world land speed record in the 1930s.

Of course, neither version is at all common as a first name in English-speaking countries.

offramp: An area in north London, named after a family, is Euston.
Mar-25-13  alfamikewhiskey: The surname Hole, not uncommon in Scandinavia, is from the Norse "hólar", pl. of "hóll", i.e. "hill".

Island-Rock Hill. Pretty cool.

(The word for "hole" in the Scandinavian languages is "hull", which makes the toponym "Hull", e.g. i Britain, a bit odd for a Nordic ear.)
