Kibitzer's Corner
Jun-17-07  vonKrolock: Hermes Amilcar Machado da Gama FM from Rio de Janeiro (born January 21st 1962) scored +2=2-2 in Thessaloniki Ol 1988, playing for Brazil in 6th board
Jun-17-07  Whitehat1963: Wonder if he ever played Marti, Castro or Batista.
Jun-18-07  vonKrolock: :) "machado" means 'axe', and it's a quite frequent surname in Portugal - 'Hermes Amilcar' are two first names, and he was known just in this way here - when we met for our only game I asked for his surname, and he answered then "Machado" - so (as a 'southern' like me would make) I wrote in the score-sheet 'H. Machado'- Now I see the 'da Gama' - it's also part of a father's side name (in Portuguese it's not like in Spanish, where the father's surname goes before the mother's side surname, usually in the combinations of names the mother's surnames appears - if - in the middle. But more usual is that the long combinated surnames comes already from the father's side - it's a combination that identifies a clan, so to say...) ***** :) Of course that this can be a reason for a lot of confusion - how would someone arrive to search for the famous Arthur NapoleĆ£o here in the page of Napoleon de Santos
