Mathias Gerusel is a (West) German IM who finished second to William Lombardy at the World Junior Championship (1957). He went on to study mathematics. His best tournament results have been 3rd at Büsum 1969 after Bent Larsen and Lev Polugaevsky, and 5th= at Solingen 1974.

With the German national team he took part in several country comparisons, for example against the Netherlands in 1967 and 1969 in Krefeld, against Czechoslovakia in 1969 in Siegburg and Bad Godesberg, and again against the Netherlands in 1970 in Hengelo. In 1977 he played for Germany at the European Team Championship in Moscow.

In the German Chess Bundesliga, Gerusel first played for the Solinger SG, with whom he became German team champion in 1974 and 1975, then until 1988 at SG Porz, with whom he became champion in 1979, 1982 and 1984.

GERUSEL, Mathias

Dec-09-21  Refused: Bio seems to be incorrect.

< He went on to study mathematics. His best tournament results have been 3rd at Bsum 1969 after Bent Larsen and Lev Polugaevsky, and 5th= at Solingen 1974.>

He worked at the Federal Ministry of Finance as a lawyer.

Thus it seems reasonable to conclude he studied law and not mathematics.
