John Rowland Hanning was born in Ewell, Epsom, Surrey in 1884, as the first of three children of Annie (1859-1935) and James Henry Skrine Hanning (1853-1930). He graduated from Oxford in 1907, and became a solicitor. He played some chess in his student years, and later in the Metropolitan Chess Club, London.
