Chessical: Dr E.N.Mulcahy was probably Ireland’s strongest player in the 1950's until his tragic death in the Aer Lingus Viscount air crash disaster in 1968 (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Aer_Li...). Dr Mulcahy’s first tournament victory was a tied win Cork junior championship in 1949. In Dr Mulcahy took the 1953 championship ahead of five former holders. The following year he was runner-up in the Irish championship, and he also represented Ireland at the West European Zonal in Munich 1954. His performance in the Zonal was the best ever by an Irish player In 1955, Dr Mulcahy competed at Hastings in Premier Reserves 'A'section.

After this he concentrated on his academeic career in the field of inorganic chemistry. Then, from 1966 to July 1967 he competed in four Irish domestic tournaments, and tied for first place in two of them. He made seven appearances in the Irish championship from 1950 to 1967, and was either winner or runner-up five times.

Domdaniel: An annual open tournament (The Mulcahy Cup) in memory of E.N. Mulcahy was held annually from about 1973 to the early 90s. I played several times between '75 and '89. It was then dormant for about a decade, but has recently been revived, as a 6-round swiss played on the UCC campus in Cork, usually in late January.

Domdaniel: Next year, 2018, will be the 50th anniversary of Mulcahy's death. A special edition of the Mulcahy Cup - a single open - takes place in January.
