Charles Bolland was born in Springs Grove, Hunslet, Leeds as the 6th of 7 children of iron master William Thomas Bolland (1827-1897) and Mary Bower (1842-1872) from Leeds, who married in 1860. He grew up with his grandmother Elizabeth Bower the first years, and after 1872 with his father and Mary’s sister Alice. He was admitted at Clare College, Cambridge in 1886, and emerged from Cambridge with a MA degree in 1898. He worked as a clergyman several places, before he became vicar in Bridgwater, Somerset (1901-1912), and rector in Brington with Bythorn & Old Weston, Huntingdonshire (1912-1925). He retired to Chichester, West Sussex (1929-1937), and died in Hastings, East Sussex. He was married in 1891 to Amy Liddle (1871-1918). They had 3 children.

Chess results: Devon-Somerset match 1904 (1/2 vs C. Tracey), 9th in Hastings B 1913 (4/10), 6th in Bromley B (?) 1920, 6th in Cheltenham Chess Festival 1928 (+2 -5 =0) (Vera Menchik won), 7th in Scarborough 1929 (+1 -5 =1), Cambridge Chess Congress Major B 1932 (loss 2½-6½ to E.
