Kibitzer's Corner
Jan-17-22  0ZeR0: Nice finishing rook maneuver by black: Rc3, Rh3, Rh1. The white queen cannot take the black queen because of Rxd1# and she also cannot take the rook because there's no stopping Qc3 followed by Qb2#.

An Englishman: Good Afternoon: 6...h6 doesn't appear in the CG database, although transpositions could occur. Don't know a thing about the Bastrikov and can't figure out where White went wrong. Perhaps the pawn sacrifice itself was a mistake?

29...Black to Play will become an excellent puzzle some day, but my favorite moves consisted of 16...0-0-0, 17...Kb8 and 18...Rc8. Weird place to secure one's King, esp. since Black intended to attack on the same side of the board.

fredthebear: 27...Rxc2 also works, but that would have spoiled <offramp>'s diagram.

Some predators might find this worth reading: https://chesstactics.org/mating-pat...

Jan-18-22  Ulhumbrus: If the Keres type attack g4 does not work against the Bastrikov variation one alternative attack is the pawn sacrifice e5 at some point.
Jan-18-22  BxChess: If white had played 28. fxe6 dxe6 and then 29. Rxg7, black doesn't have time for 29...Rh3 because 30. Rxf7 creates unstoppable mating threats.
Jan-19-22  Jambow: <offramp: This sort of mating position happens in 1000s of beginners' games...>

Still it was finished by removing the defender with a plan B mating threat. 2700 chess no but good stuff for mortals and patzers like me.

I just had virtually the same double mating attack as white days ago.

Feb-10-22  cehertan: Strange to play the routine modern treatment 8 f3 securing the center for a wing attack and then abandon that idea 2 moves later. Admire the courage of Grandelius but he seems to go overboard sometimes, also in round 1 this event.
Feb-10-22  cehertan: Ps if you dont find blacks 29Rh1 right away you need to reread Forcing Chess Moves! After reading it you should find this in your sleep.
