The final position is Mate-in-53 according to SF. Make your opponent prove s/he can make 53 accurate moves consecutively.

Ode to the independent thinker Hugh Myers: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hugh_...

Feb-22-22  optimal play: <The final position is Mate-in-53 according to SF.> That can't be right.

With correct play by white how can black possibly hold off mate for another 53 moves?

Feb-22-22  0ZeR0: Confirming the suspicions of <optimal play> and myself, I let SF run on the final position for a bit and it came up with a mate in 15 with correct play (depth 60). However, still a nice find, <ftb>. An interesting game to be sure. And article which was apparently written by our very own <FSR>.

fredthebear: Here's what the engine said in quick mode from the final position shown:

1) mated-in-53 (52 ply) 95...Kg2 96.Ka6

There are not many pawn moves left. That means there had to be a tremendous amount of bishop shuffling to avoid three-fold repetition of the position. It still seems implausible.

Depth matters <0ZeR0>. I take comfort knowing there's a better way! I'm hearing echoes of a Nimzowitsch study of bishops of the same color. My instant recall is not what it once was. In five to ten hours, or five to ten days, it'll come back to me.

Here's a fascinating SCB ending study involving interference, promotion (but w/distant king): https://www.bing.com/videos/search?...

Intelligence and beauty makes a marvelous combination!!

FSR: <0ZeR0> Yes, I wrote that article on Christmas Day, right after Hugh Myers' death, at the request of Edward Winter.

A fine tribute to Myers indeed. Well done!
