Kibitzer's Corner
Oct-29-23  Brenin: Black is a P up, with a more active Q and a much better B. However, enforcing the win could be a long grind. Winning a second P would help, so 40 ... Bxg4 41 Bxg4 Qg8, forking White's R and B. The R can be saved, but not the B, so now White has two connected passed Ps and should win easily.
Oct-29-23  mel gibson: I saw the text move but but I wondered if a simple 40...a4 was better?

Stockfish 16 says:
40. .. Bxg4

(40. .. Bxg4 (Bd7xg4 Bf3xg4 Qa1-g1 Ke2-d3 Qg1xg4 Qd2-g2 Qg4-d1+ Qg2-d2 Qd1-f3+ Kd3-c2 a5-a4 Kc2-b2 a4xb3 a2-a3 Qf3xe4 Qd2-c1 Qe4-d3 Rh2-g2 Ra8-h8 Rg2-d2 Qd3-e3 a3-a4 ) +8.61/44 732)

score for Black +8.61 depth 44.

If I force SF to follow my idea:

40. ..a4

(40. .. a4 41. Rh1 (Rh2-h1 Qa1-d4 Qd2xd4 e5xd4 g4-g5 a4xb3 a2xb3 Ra8-a2+ Ke2-f1 Ra2-b2 Rh1-h4 Rb2-b1+ Kf1-e2 Rb1xb3 Rh4xf4 Rb3-c3 Rf4-f6 Rc3xc4 e4-e5 d6xe5 Ke2-d2 Rc4-) -5.10/44 302)

score for White -5.10 depth 44 so not as strong as the text move but still winning.

Oct-29-23  Pawn Slayer: Didn't see it. I went 40....a4, which i still think wins.

perfidious: At the last move of the time check, the simple 40....a4 should prise open the queenside and bring the point home, but I prefer the more forcing 40....Bxg4.

  al wazir: 42. Rh4 Qg3 43. Qe1. Now what?

My line was 38...a4. If now 9. bxa4, then 39...Rxa4. Black wins the a-♙ and is two ♙s up. If 39. b4, then 39...cxb4. Black is again two ♙s up, with a threat to promote one.

Oct-30-23  Zenchess: What about 42. Rh4 g5?
Oct-30-23  saturn2: 40...Bxg4 and if white retakes Qg1. I thought 41.Rg1 resists more but the engine denies.
Oct-30-23  dannydoc: How does Black win from here, if White moves the rook from H2 to H4?
Oct-30-23  saturn2: dannydoc: 42 Rh4 g5 and white loses a piece
