Kibitzer's Corner
Aug-21-22  optimal play: 12.Kh2?!

<18...Bd5 Preventing Ne4> If 18...Ba6 19.Ne4 Bxd4 20.Bxd4 Qd5! ∓

22.Rc1?

23...Qe6!

30.Bxh4? Better to just exchange bishops.

30...Rc5!

<34.Rxg3 Lazare should have taken with the king. Watson then had in mind 34...Rc8 35.Qb7 Kg6 36.h4 Kh5> Or better for black 35...d5 36.h4 Qe5+

This was an unexpected loss for Lazare who finished equal second on 10½ points in the 1945 Australian Chess Championship (the first played since 1939).

Despite this win, Watson finished further down on 7½ points.

The title went to Lajos Steiner who finished on 12 points after 15 rounds.
