Sep-13-20 | | Transformer: What a strange game for Carlsen. He spends almost 4 minutes (of a 20 minute game) on 29. Qc3?, drops his knight, then resigns without waiting for a response from So. |
|
Sep-14-20 | | Sokrates: It's the type of blunder where your mind is x moves ahead of the present position and you sort of bypass its demands. His position was inferior, though, and he may have so annoyed by that already that he simply wanted to get out of the mess. |

Oct-06-20 | | Cheapo by the Dozen: So Unusual |
|
Oct-06-20 | | Cheapo by the Dozen: I don't know if a chess variant will be accepted as GOTD, but this is a rather remarkable beatdown of Carlsen that probably wouldn't happen with normal rules. And by the way, switch to pgn4web as the PGN viewer to actually play through the game. :) |
|
Oct-08-20 | | Cheapo by the Dozen: Looking at this game again, I wonder whether I was exaggerating So's advantage, assuming a non-terrible alternative to Carlsen's actual 29th move. E.g.
29 Nc3 Ne3
30 Nd3
and I think White has safely freed his position somwhat. |
|
Oct-08-20 | | hdcc: It's chess, Jim, but not as we know it. |
|
Oct-08-20 | | Cheapo by the Dozen: How about 29 Nc3 Bh5?
The idea is to prevent Rg4 as much as it is to attack the f3 pawn. The idea is bad if White has a sufficiently good use for the discovered attack on the c4 knight, but any plan I've actually considered seems to fail to ... Ne3. |

Oct-08-20 | | erimiro1: So unusual - Can't see the game |

 | | perfidious: Not so unusual of late. |

 | | catlover: I've been using pgn4web as my standard game viewer for the last couple of weeks. The "Olga" viewer at some point simply stopped loading the games. |
|
Oct-08-20 | | AlicesKnight: THANKS FOR HEADS-UP ON CHANGING VIEWER. An Olga own-goal.... <Socrates> may well be right about too much thinking ahead. Cf. Geller vs Fischer, 1970 where the Wade/O'Connell book says of the move 67 position that Geller allowed ...g3 because he was thinking of replying 70.PxP+ and then KxR! I'm sure others out there have better examples. |
