I think Whyld was conflicted, because he would've known that Lasker apparently didn't lose a game at this simul, which is why he hedged his bets giving the occasion as <Cheltenham, [19] February 1908>. A close reading of the <Examiner> column reveals that Lasker took alternating black & white boards, the latter supposedly being intended for the relatively weaker players.This wasn't Lasker's usual practice at the time, but it wasn't unknown.

Webb's notes include: <I think Lasker is magnificent....[after 26.Ng5] The champion here ejaculated "this is a terribly complicated game.">
