fredthebear: My German is a rather rusty, but FTB thinks the above message roughly translates into "Both players are originally from Budapest. Black could not decide what response to play, so the two went and had a drink together. It was an illuminating experience for both, and they kept in touch by correspondence. No one was injured during the filming, but the barmaid slapped someone (it's unclear who)."

fredthebear: P.S. Of course, there were no cell phones or emails or social media (Mark Zuckerberg was just a babe in swaddling diapers) back in those days, and smoke signals were not in vogue. Folks just relied on gossip from the paparazzi, or they corresponded.

fredthebear: <whiteshark> So, is my interpretation above correct, more or less?
May-15-19  whiteshark: <ftb> more or less. ;)

This game and my initial kibitzing are part of Game Collection: xx_ Project Buergelmaschine and thus open for a wide round of interpretations and I liked your your imaginative and stimulative one very much.

The same applies to your numerous game collections, in which I have found many a treasure.:)

Tabanus: This Round 3 game was scheduled for October 8 but was for some reason played on the only rest day October 14. My impression is that the players had planned in advance to save energy, who knows. But then why not play it on October 8. Are we sure it's not a missing game score?

fredthebear: <Tabanus> Truly, both players were born in Budapest, a year apart. It seems they are buddies and just did not desire to play each other yet again. Better to relax and defeat thy next round opponent than struggle to knock thy friend down in the tournament standings. GMs strive to win or draw, just avoid losses and they stay in the hunt. The two might have used the opportunity to watch other games start and prepare for the remainder of the tournament.

A couple other tournament internet sources show a 1.e4 draw with no other moves for this third round game, so it seems the score is correct, if one chooses to believe internet sources.

Yes, FTB is speculating, but this is common behavior amongst friendly GMs. Both players finished 1 point behind the standings leaders. BTW, Adorjan won with White and Sax lost with Black in the (next) fourth round.

Such routine matters cause chess-playing bears to wonder aloud about Hungarian goulash, pálinka, barmaids, paparazzi, the great 1980s and where it all fits in their game collections.

fredthebear: Who but the great <whiteshark> could assemble such a collection as Game Collection: xx_ Project Buergelmaschine. It stands alone as a unique cadre of art and expressed latent wisdom. Whiteshark sets a high standard for the rest of us to aspire to.

FTB was so curious of the collection's origin that he asked the Pink Panther to investigate Dinge, die wir nicht verstehen, this fellow Roger Martin Buergel. This was found: http://www.iea.usp.br/en/persons/sp... Of course, that is but one projected public persona. We all (don't we?) assume an alter ego at the chessboard. Don't be fooled by first impressions. Play the man, not the board.

Further exploration of this intriguing game collection of evenly pitched battles will be necessary.

perfidious: While short draws predominated between these players after the early 1970s, 365chess actually has a second one-mover between them.
