Oct-27-18 | | patzer2: From my club player's perspective, Black's clearly decisive mistake appears to be 16...Nf5? allowing 17. Bxf5 +- (+6.68 @ 21 ply, Stockfish 9). Instead, Black could have put up considerably more resistance with 16...Qd8 17. Bxg6 Qxf6 18. Bd3 ± when strong play might continue 18...Bd7 19. Re3 Bc6 20. Rg3+ Kh8 21. Qe5 Qxe5 22. fxe5 Nf5 23. Bxf5 exf5 24. Rxf5 Rg8 25. Ne2 ± to ± (+1.67 @ 21 ply, Stockfish 9). From a strong Master's perspective, I suspect Black was probably busted after White's strong surprise move 15. Bf6! with a Bishop that appears to be poison whether Black takes it or leaves it alone. At a lower depth search, the computer indicates Black can hold with 15...Bd7 16. Kh1 Be8 = (+0.07 @ 17 ply, Stockfish 9). However, a bit deeper search after 15...Bd7 16. Kh1 Be8 17. Re3! (+2.46 @ 21 ply, Stockfish 9) reveals Black is lost. Early in the opening, in response to the apparent novelty 9. Ng5!? (doesn't appear in our Opening Explorer), instead of 9...Be7 10. Qh5! ⩲ to ± (+0.45 @ 21 ply, Stockfish 9) Black can apparently equalize with 9...Qc7 = (-0.09 @ 21 ply, Stockfish 9). |

Jan-03-24 | | King.Arthur.Brazil: Nice combination, I guess: 21. Ne7+ Nxe7 22. fxe7 Qxh6 23. exd8=Q+ Kg7 (Kh7 24. Rh3) 24. Rg3+ Kh7 25. Qg8#. |
|
Jan-03-24 | | Refused: Smooht finish 21.Ne7+ Nxe7 22.fxe7 black has to capture otherwise Rg3 turns ouf the lights. While Queen and Knight work really well together, here black has just over loaded his tandom and they can't hold the position together. |

Jan-03-24 | | Mayankk: Black Queen is en prise but it can ignore this minor detail via 21 ... Ne7+. The only response is 22 Nxe7, after which 22 ... fxe7, forking White Queen and Rook, is like a hammer blow. 23 Qxh6 exd8=Q+ 24 Kg7 Rg3+ and the game is over. |

Stockfish 16 says mate in 11 :

4.Rff3 Bd7 5.Qxa8 Qg7 6.Rh3+ Kg6 7.Qd8 f6 8.Reg3+ Kf7 9.Qxd7+ Kf8 10.Qxg7+

Jan-03-24 | | stacase: If I were to plug this into my dumb little "Chess Tiger" program and click on suggest a move,
21. Ne7+ would be the only move highlighted. Well really, it's as obvious as the proverbial north end of a southbound goat. I'm not spending my valuable time setting it up to see if that's so (-: |

Jan-03-24 | | Damenlaeuferbauer: After long pondering, the strong American GM Jeffery Xiong finally found the nice combination 21.Ne7+!,Nxe7 (21.-,Qxe7 22.Qg7#) 22.fxe7!,Qxh6 (22.-,Qxe7 23.Rg3+,Qg5 24.Rxg5#) 23.exd8Q+,Kg7 (23.-,Kh7 24.Rh3 +-) 24.Rg3+, winning black's queen for a white rook and the game. |
|
Jan-03-24 | | TheaN: Honestly, the first move is not necessarily key here, if White can't play <21.Ne7+> there's not too much to gain. The point is <21....Nxe7 22.fxe7!>: White threatens Rg3+ and exd8 and there's no move that protects against both, leading to Black's eventual demise after <22....Qxh6 23.exd8Q+ +-> and mate soon. |

Jan-03-24 | | TheaN: <Andrew Chapman: <21 Qh5 was my move--equally decisive.>One has to see that there is mate with the rook after Kf8 Qh8+ Nxh8.> I'll elaborate a bit on this as written like this it's a bit unclear what you mean. After 21.Qh5 Rxd5 22.Rh3 White threatens Qh7#, and the only way to 'prevent' that is to move the queen so the king can go to f8. However, even if it comes with tempo 22....Qc5+ 23.Kh1 #4:
 click for larger view
Black has no way to prevent Qh7-h8+ with Rxh8#, ie 'best' is 23...Qg1+ 24.Kxg1 Rd6 (aiming at f6) 25.Qh7+ Kf8 26.Qh8+ Nxh8 27.Rxh8#. Neat finish, though the game line is simply faster. |
