Sep-28-18 | | whiteshark: Final moments of game: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uvI... (~ 5 mins) "It was the top board clash between two of the strongest teams at the Batumi Olympiad 2018 - Azerbaijan and Armenia. Both the teams are well matched and their rivalry goes beyond chess board. In this crunch situation it was Azerbaijan who came out on top thanks to the victories of Mamedyarov against Aronian and Radjabov against Sargissian. In this video we capture the final moments of Aronian's dejection at losing the game and also Radjabov's final handshake to win the match! A great moment for Azerbaijan fans." | | HeMateMe: Pins and weak squares, terrific attack. Looks like blacks bad pawn structure from the opening wasn't expected to produce a good position. So many of these positions seem to end up with a Knight sitting on a rook file and an uncastled king. |

Opening Explorer I am guessing that Black played 11 ... f6 with the possible intention of ... Kf7 and castling by hand. Mamedyarov sacrificed a Pawn with check (16 ... Bd6 17. Qxd5+ Kh8), then relied on a weak back rank threat (18 ... Qe8) to get out of trouble. 20 ... Rb5 & 21 ... Bb7 were useful developing moves hitting the Queen with tempo. 22 ... Be4 was another nice attacking move (24. Qxe4? Bxh2+) and then 23 ... Bxg2 (no "!" per Fritz the anti-human cyborg) gave White serious King safety issues, leading to the Pin 27 ... Re8 regaining a piece. 38 ... Bf4! would have improved, but Black traded Queens into a won endgame with the three connected passed Pawns on the Kingside. Carlsen had the most Best Games nominations with 13, followed by Caruana with 12 and Mamedyarov with 10. But Mamedyarov placed three wins in the Top Ten. |
