kingscrusher: 12...Be7 might actually be a key mistake - black had to play c5 and fight early for some key squares.

If 18....Kg7 White has 19.Nxf7, since ...Kxf7 allows a forced mate after 20.Ng5+ Kf8 21.Qg6 Ne5 22.Ne6#.

After the game's 18....Kf8 SF suggests 19.Qc4! -- Black has no reasonable way to defend f7. Of course 19.Nxf7 and Tal's move also work. After 19.Ng5 Nxh5 20.Qh7! it's a forced mate even though Black takes the knight with check. Tal always keeps his eyes on the prize!

keypusher: One more comment on this wonderful game. After 18....Kf8, the engine suggests 19.Qc4, as noted. But Tal's 19.Ng5

...sets up complementary, beautiful threats: 20.Ne6+ fe 21.Qg6 and 20.Qg6 fg 21.Ne6#. SF's "defenses" at this point all involve giving the piece back with a hopeless position.

keypusher: One more nice variation. Tal might have avoided 19.Qc4 because of 19....Kg7 20.Qxf7+ Kh8.

The quickest mate in that case, courtesy of SF, is 21.Nh4! Nf8 22.Ng6+ Nxg6 23.hg (threatening 24.g7+ and opening the h-file) 23....Bf8 24.Rh1! Qd7 25.g7+ Bxg7 26.Qg8+! Rxg8 27.Nf7#.
