Jul-23-16  whiteshark: Shake hands - draw agreed
Jul-23-16  varishnakov: Game drawn.
Jul-23-16  whiteshark: Both remaining games are full of life , maybe we gonna see the Naka game ?
Jul-23-16  1971: So is a major coward. No ambition at all. 22 year old top 10 player that won't challenge the WC even with the white pieces. Even Giri isn't this blatant. What a loser Wesley So is.

Jul-23-16  beenthere240: I'm not quite so hard on So. However, you'd think he would relish the chance to hold MC's feet to the coals, especially knowing that Carlsen just wants to get a draw and pick up his check. Unless trying to win a game that "doesn't matter" us considered infra dig in PRI chess circles.

PawnSac: Most importantly, Wesley didn't miss anything
Jul-23-16  epistle: He missed winning.
Jul-26-16  Pulo y Gata: "After the last round my opponent Wesley So said that he wanted to play a normal game. It did not look that way as <<he chose a well know drawing line as white>> against my Ragozin defense.> I should add that I was not at all unhappy about the one hour 38-moves draw, being low on energy and having a slight cold since the day before." -Carlsen
Jul-26-16  wordfunph: He DARED to play for a draw against Carlsen with the white pieces? Watta player! I'm a fan!

Jul-28-16  chessalem: <he chose a well know drawing line as white>

well, you should have avoided the Ragozin if you knew there was a drawing line and you were well intent on winning. Entirely your fault you white orangutan.

Jul-29-16  gokusano: This is a good Friday puzzle, white to play and draw in 38 moves.
Jul-29-16  epistle: He said he always aim for a win--but action speaks louder than words.
Jul-29-16  gokusano: I believe the kid, except against Lagrave, carlsen, nakamura, yangyi, hou yifan, etc.
Jul-29-16  chessalem: <To move:
black
Last move:
31. Qb7>

What did Magnus move?

Answer:

31.... Qb4

He offered an exchange of queens after which bishops of opposite color remained- a guaranteed draw.

When Wesley took his offer, he turned the tables on him and blamed the poor lad for the draw.

Now, who was the one who chickened out in the end?

You tell me.

Jul-29-16  beenthere240: I thought Carlsen made it clear that if So wanted a fight he would fight, but if So preferred peace, that was fine, too. I don't think So was a chicken, I just think it would have been enterprising to have thrown the kitchen sink at Magnus. How about 1. e4 e5 2. f4?
Jul-29-16  chessalem: Well, I think Magnus is a chicken worthy to be roasted with charcoal at bacolod's manokan inasal country https://www.google.com/search?q=bac...

It takes two to tango...the resulting draw is a joint and not a solidary effort. Wesley need not put himself at risk in essaying the King's gambit or entering the jungle inhabited by wild animals win he could reach his destination by driving in the open highway in his cadillac. In this case, the burden of playing for a win lies on Magnus with a moral obligation to prove his superiority expressed in elo numbers. He should have played an irregular opening in response to Wes' E4 opening- how about 1.....F4?

I believe that Magnus' making Wesley's a scapegoat for his failure to topple him is uncalled for. The truth of the matter is that he failed to live up to expectation of grinding out a win over his lower rated foe despite unlimited resources by his side... Instead of congratulating Wesley for holding his ground, he lashed out at him and planted an evidence to support his unfounded accusation of timid play- a great show of humility worthy of a world champion indeed.

Jul-29-16  tuttifrutty: I can't agree more than enough. The truth is Magnus was looking for a whipping boy only to backfire as a result of unwillingness to fight for a win. Finger pointing made him look like a cry baby similar to the fanboys without a doubt. A worthy of donning the crown?

You tell me.

Jul-29-16  Pulo y Gata: He had white, and he needed to win to improve not only his standing but also his rating. Magnus didn't need any of these and he had black.

Those were what you ignored...

Understandably.

Not only the numbers of wins but also the quality of his games show the champ's fighting spirit, displayed time and again.

As for the drawmaster, the businessman, the lovah of god with all his strength - blah.

perfidious: Another 'lucky' tournament victory for the champion.

Meanwhile, <tolengoof> does his number, playing attack dog yet again to an empty stadium.

Bye the bye, <filth merchant>, too bad your attempt to leave a deposit of your detritus at my game page vanished--can't imagine how or why that happened!

What did Carlsen have in mind?

Position after 10…cxd4

click for larger view

11.Nxd4 is the aforementioned drawing line which leads to massive exchanges after 11…Bd7 12. Qb3 Nc6

How to avoid this simplification of the position?

Recently, White (Aronian, Mamedyarov) tends to start with 11.Ne4.

This was possibly a chance to try to pressure Carlsen "being low on energy and having a slight cold".
