Kibitzer's Corner
Jun-28-20  mel gibson: The first move is obvious.

Stockfish is calling it as less than a pawn difference:

12... Bxf6

score for Black +0.87 depth 39

Jun-28-20  drollere: i did get the first two moves so they must be obvious, but i didn't see how the bishop sacrifice would gain a tempo and allow the p to advance. igor went in with both feet.
Jun-28-20  Predrag3141: Black seems to have been planning this starting at least with 10 … Bd7. If White captures on f6 then, instead of interposing 11 Nd5 Be7, the same idea applies: Black abandons his bishop on d7 in exchange for a queenside attack:

11 Bxf6 Qxf6 12 Rxd7 Bxc3 13 bxc3 Qxc3

Here as in the actual game, drawing Black's queen out to win the bishop on d7 is a bad idea for White. Better is to pause for a move and trade off the e4-pawn.

White is just a pawn down. Probably a book trap.

Jun-28-20  devere: The actual problem is on Black's 13th move. Qxf6 is a nice sacrifice.

White's 13th move should have been fxe4, and then Black has only a small advantage.

Jun-28-20  stacase: I was happy to get the first 3 moves (-:

Yes - Black's reply was wrong.
Stockfish 11 shows that.

Jun-28-20  Brenin: 11 ... e3, threatening Bd2+ followed by e2, looks like a better plan than 11 ... Be7, which is (or at least should have been) answered as <devere> wrote by 12 Bxf6 Bxf6 13 fxe4, e.g. 13 ... Rxe4 14 Nxf6+ gxf6 (Qxf6 15 Qxf6 gxf6 16 Rxd7) 15 Bd3 with plenty of compensation for the P. Black does better to decline the P on move 13 by 13 ... Be5 or Bh4, with a slight positional plus (2 Bs, better Ps, better development).
Jun-28-20  agb2002: Black has a pawn for a knight.

White threatens 13.Nxe7+ N(R)xe7 14.Qg3 and 13.Qg3 Bxf6 14.Nxf6+ Qxf6 15.Rxd7.

In the second threat both d7 and a2 would end up defenseless. This suggests 12... Bxf6 13.Nxf6+ (13.fxe4 Bg5+ 14.Kb1 Rxe4 wins a pawn but White gets the initiative after 15.Nf3 Bh6 16.Bd3) 13... Qxf6 14.Rxd7 Qe6 15.Rxc7 e3 followed by Qxa2, Rad8, Nb(d)4 and the attack seems to compensate the piece.

Jun-28-20  goodevans: <devere: [...] White's 13th move should have been fxe4, and then Black has only a small advantage.>

<Brenin: 11 ... e3, threatening Bd2+ followed by e2, looks like a better plan than 11 ... Be7...>

Maybe black set a trap and white just fell right into it. If this were blitz then I'd be pretty certain that that was it but it's rapid and so you'd think white would be more suspicious that his opponent had just 'blundered' a piece.
