Oct-03-19  Cheapo by the Dozen: Yowza. I don't think an expert or whatever Watson was at the time goes into the first round of the US Open expecting trouble like that.
Oct-03-19  goodevans: I guess white must have assumed black would just complete the Q trade with <17...Rxa5>. That would have kept the position even.

<17...Nxe3> must have come as a bit of a shock. <17...Rxc2+> would also have been good for black.
