The point of 34 ♖c1x♘c5! is that the Black c5-knight is needed to control the e6-sq so that Black can meet the <DISCOVERED CHECK> d5-d6+ by <INTERPOSING> on the e6-sq, which is now <UNSUPPORTED> since a Black rook is on c5 instead of a Black knight.

Black saw this after 32 ♘f3-e5! and wisely did not take the knight, which would lead to the variation given above, and instead simply moved his king with 32 ... ♔h8-g7.
