fredthebear: 65.h6 Bxh6 initially looks strange to give away the passed pawn, but it was a necessary bishop deflection as Black was threatening a rook fork of royalty on the back rank. (Had White moved the queen off the back rank instead of the h-pawn, the Black rook would deliver checkmate.) Thus, White creates an escape square (66.Kh2) for his king.

78.Qxf6+?!

Instead of capturing the pawn with check and creating his own passed pawn (very tempting), it looks like White should have played for the draw with another 78.Qb6+ etc.

82.Bxd5+? Another pawn capture with check that doesn't turn out as well as hoped.

Perhaps 82.Qe7+ again playing for the draw was the way to go.

Of course, we get to see more by watching White play for the win.

88.f7 is not possible because Black has a mate-in-two.

88...Be5! is a game-winning interposition with two threats.

89.f7 is not possible because the reply 89...Nf4+ is devasting.

Some would have resigned here as White, but there's a puncher's chance with a queen on an open board.
