Jul-15-13  notyetagm: A Giri vs Topalov, 2013

What a unmitigated *disaster* for Topalov, who needed a good showing to wrap up his Grand Prix series.

Jul-15-13  Daniel65: Is this Giri's first win over Topalov?

Domdaniel: What was going through Topalov's head here? He gets almost nothing for the piece, and has to concede within a few moves.

<15. Bf3 Bf5?!

<<<"I overestimated my position." (Topalov)>>> 15... Nxd4 15... Bxf3 16. Ndxf3 f6 >

Overestimated his position??? I'll say!

That's the thing about Topalov: he can play like a genius but I do not think any top player makes more ??-moves then he does.

Jul-15-13  csmath: The level of play of black in this game can be described as a patzer style. It is hard to believe this is an elite GM.

This is surely the worst game in Beijing and the whole tournament is not exactly brilliant.

Jul-15-13  csmath: 6. ... Nh6?
(yes it is on books but it is still stupid)

10. ... a5?
(Black has illusion of "countergame" on the queenside?)

15. ... Bf5?
16. ... Nxd4??
17. ... Kh8?

The best move he made is to resign.
And this is not to say that Giri played particularly good at all.

Jul-15-13  galdur: Sloppy. Giri exploited it very well.
Jul-15-13  notyetagm: <csmath: ... The best move he made is to resign. >

Ouch!

Tell us what you really think? :-)

Jul-15-13  notyetagm: <csmath: ... This is surely the worst game in Beijing and the whole tournament is not exactly brilliant>

And this horrible loss may end up costing Topalov a spot in the 2014 Candidates Tournament, unless he can beat Moro tomorrow.

Jul-15-13  Hesam7: <csmath: The best move he made is to resign. >

Topalov's play in this tournament has been way below his standards beside the two games he has lost, he had losing positions in two other games (both of which he ultimately drew).

Jul-16-13  ahmadov: What I really do not understand is why Topa played 17...Kh8 when seeing the possibility of 18.f6?

And since losses do not bother Topalov in the least bit, he comes right back in the final round 11 and *crushes* Moro to win the Grand Prix!!

Neither did Topalov, and he played it. :-)

tamar: Topalov explained today that he overestimated his position.

"I thought I was much better, and then Giri found 15 Bf3, a very good move, and actually the position is around equal.

"But somehow I had the feeling I had to crush him, and it got completely crazy, because it happens one mistake after another, because you miss one move, I couldn't keep control. It was very unpleasant."

Jul-17-13  GilesFarnaby: Indeed this is the 'Short Variation' of the CK.
Jul-17-13  badest: <I thought I was much better, and then Giri found 15 Bf3, a very good move, and actually the position is around equal.> Lol. How is 15 Bf3 "a very good move"? And what's wrong with simply trading the Bs?

GM Ipatov commenting at chessbase.com recommended ... ♗e4x♗f3 ♘d2x♗f3 ♕d8-b6 ♕d1-d2 f7-f6, with a fine game for Black.
