Kibitzer's Corner
Mar-30-16  optimal play: Wallace-Esling 1895 Australian Championship

Game 6, Wednesday 19th June

<The match was resumed at 2 p.m. yesterday at the rooms of the Melbourne Chess Club, when the sixth game was commenced.

Mr. Wallace had the move, and offered the Queen's Gambit, which was declined.

The game proceeded on somewhat irregular lines, and on the 11th move the opening player succeeded in winning a pawn, which however turned out to be a "Greek gift," as it enabled his opponent to set up a most powerful attack.

On his 13th move Mr. Esling established a position which ultimately won the exchange and two pawns, and after a series of strong but unavailing defensive moves Mr. Wallace was forced to surrender on the 30th move at 5 p.m.>

Apr-05-16  optimal play: 5...Nbd7 was a novelty.

10.Nxd7? Much better is 10.f4!

11.Bxd5?? Wins a pawn and loses the game.

Better simply to exchange bishops.

11...Nxd5!

24...Rxe3! wins!

After six games:-

½ 1 1 1 ½ 0 (4/6) [+3/=2/-1] Wallace

½ 0 0 0 ½ 1 (2/6) [+1/=2/-3] Esling
