Kibitzer's Corner
Oct-27-12  vinidivici: it should be a draw i think.
45...Rf4 is useless. Tarrasch rule proves no good in here. A6 PAWN....TOPMOST THING. 45...Rc1! guarantees a draw. It preparing rook to check from behind and from the side. if 46.Ke5 then Rc6+ draw. And with the dreadful Rf4, the most pathetic thing is black sacrificed the topmost a6 pawn that would lead to the salvation.

after 46.Rb8 then 46...Kd7
47.Kf7 then 47...Rf1 Its time to go with rook behind the pawn.

The point is black still has a pawn at a6. king will support a6 pawn meanwhile black rook will do the harakiri if necessary to white f-pawn.

47...Rf1
48.f6 Kd6! preparing support the pawn
49.Ke7 Re1
50.Kf8 a5 its now clear the plan....black will sacrifice the rook for the pawn....that in the certainty in time, black rook itself needs to do the suicide for the black pawn or perpetual checks never ends.

Oct-27-12  computer chess guy: 45. .. Rf4 is indeed the losing move. According to tablebases the following moves draw: Ra4, Rh4, Rc2, Rc1, a5. The others lose.
Oct-27-12  vinidivici: Its not so hard to get the draw here, actually, with a6 pawn remains.

I can understand the pressure Berndt faced in the match. The tough opponent, time trouble, etc, etc, or confidence problem. I believe he could do better,
