 | | Check It Out: <goodevans> calling a redhead a ginger i thought was universal in the English speaking world. Plus, its Simon's nickname, the Ginger GM. |
Jan-07-23
 | | MissScarlett: Prince William likes this game. |
Jan-07-23 | | goodevans: <Check It Out> Very aware of both of those points but it's whether <knock down ginger> is something familiar outside these shores I was questioning. It's something I played as a kid (I hesitate to call it a game) but only when it's what my mates chose. I much preferred 'forty forty' or football or cricket or practically anything else we played. |
Jan-07-23 | | Cibator: <goodevans: Amusing pun, but how universal is it? Do you have to be British to properly appreciate it? Not that I would have a problem with that.> The prank being referenced is pretty well universal, but the pun based on it is more likely to be appreciated in the UK (or Canada, where it's known as Knock Knock Ginger). Americans know it as Ding Dong Ditch, among other names. It can be a dangerous game to try there, though - more than one perp has been shot at by irate householders. |
Jan-07-23
 | | MissScarlett: The game has also become popular amongst Amazon delivery drivers. |
Jan-07-23 | | Brenin: It was called Bobby Knocking, or Knock and Run, in Wales when I was a kid. |
Jan-07-23
 | | Dionysius1: It's certainly a well meaning pun, but the expression is archaic in the UK and far from universal elsewhere. And the ginger in "Knockdown ginger" just means "and scarper". Unless Simon is particularly fleet of foot, it's not even relevant to him. Me a killjoy? You're welcome. |
Jan-07-23 | | Mosaichino: Great Nakamura! |
Jan-07-23 | | goodevans: <Dionysius1: [...] the expression is archaic in the UK...> Archaic? Well, that's what we called it when I was a kid so what does that say about me? :o| |
Jan-07-23 | | Messiah: Terrible pun. |
Jan-07-23
 | | OhioChessFan: <ge: Do you have to be British to properly appreciate it? > Apparently. |

 | | OhioChessFan: <Dion: And the ginger in "Knockdown ginger" just means "and scarper". Unless Simon is particularly fleet of foot, it's not even relevant to him.> You do know his moniker, "The Ginger GM"?
I'd never heard the term before but after learning it, I'd say it's a fairly clever pun. |

Jan-07-23
 | | MissScarlett: <Does anybody have more information about an alleged Simon Williams vs. Hikaru Nakamura fight that GM Aman Hambleton once mentioned on stream?> https://twitter.com/ChessRumors/sta... |
Jan-07-23 | | stone free or die: The video here is much clearer in the audio department: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yAr...
The next question is, what event?
. |
Jan-07-23
 | | MissScarlett: They played together at Isle of Man Masters (2018). Gibraltar is another possibility. |
Jan-07-23
 | | Check It Out: I actually didn't know the game; that makes the pun even better. But yes, that is probably UK centric. |
Jan-07-23
 | | Dionysius1: Hi <OhioChessFan>. Yes, I know about the Ginger GM moniker. I was just (possibly querulously) pointing out that red's not what ginger means in "Knock Down Ginger". Yeh, all right it's a good pun. |
Jan-07-23 | | stone free or die: I googled <Knockdown Ginger> and got this video as the top hit: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wfL...
Seems to mean a <"ring the doorbell and run away"> prank, is that correct? . |
Jan-07-23 | | goodevans: <stone free or die> Pretty much so. The 'knock' might suggest it dates from a time when doorbells weren't particularly common. |
Jan-07-23 | | stone free or die: Thanks <goodevans>, but goodness gracious, is that even the right name for it?! https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Knock.... . |
Jan-07-23
 | | Check It Out: <sfod> read the second paragraph in your link. |
Jan-08-23 | | stone free or die: <CIO> - check out the history page for the link I gave.... https://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.ph... Somebody edited the page after I posted here. The previous version, i.e. the one I originally linked too, is here: https://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.ph... This is why it is best to be explicit in remarks and retorts - what part of the second paragraph are you referring to? . |
Jan-08-23
 | | Check It Out: The part where it says, "knock down ginger". |
Jan-08-23 | | stone free or die: Thanks <CIO>, missed that, and it right out in plain sight. (Maybe I skimmed over it because it wasn't italicized?) |
