Black to move, after 22.Nf5:

He can not exchange bishops with 23.-,Bxc2 as 24.d7 wins instantly. So Black played 23.-,Be6, which is fairly equal. But if Black had interposed 22.-,Sxd3+ 23.Bxd3, Bxf5 then 24.Bc5? would not work any more. Black to move.

As Black now *can* exchange the bishop with 24.-,Bxd3. White can not play d6-d7, and on 25.Rxd3,Qf5 26.Rc3,a5 it is downhill for him. Instead Mamedyarov went to create tactical winning chances (he is SO good at that!), and after 27.-,gxf5?? Black is lost, while 27.-,Bxf5 was OK. |
