fredthebear: Capturing the White queen is fatal. Black had to forego the queen and defend with 23...g6 instead. He's still worse, but it's better than allowing the White rook checks. The final position is a forced mate in two with 25...Kh7 26.Rh5+ Ke8 27.Rh8#.

He's still worse, but it's better than allowing the White rook checks.> Worse than you think <fred>. This game was featured in the early-60's book "Chess with the Masters" by Martin Beheim. Early on, Beheim criticizes 10..Bxc5, as does Stockfish, recommending 10..Nbd7 to recapture with the knight. Fast-forwarding to the critical position, 23..g6 24.Qxd5,Be6 25.Qxe6!,fxe6 26.Rxg6+,Kh7 27.Ng5#, or the glum 24..Qxa2+ 25.Qxa2,Rxa2 26.Kxa2 with white a piece up and still attacking on the k-side.
