Aug-23-12  The Last Straw: Funny pun! :-)
Aug-23-12  The Last Straw: At the end the b4-♙ is going to drop: 59…♖g4 60.♖xb4! . Unless black plays 59…b3?!? which in case white replies 60.♖xa3 or if black shifts his rook somewhere on the back rank then white obviously plays 60.g8♕+. :-)
Aug-23-12  The Last Straw: Black apprently made the mistake of apparently not connecting his pawns.
Aug-23-12  The Last Straw: First four posts in a row on GOTD day! :-)

Phony Benoni: All we are saying is "Give Ps a Chance."
Aug-23-12  The Last Straw: The games for GOTD are getting really weird (except for yesterday).
Aug-23-12  ChessMystery: What about 22. Qg4+ winning the knight back that way? Have I overlooked something?
Aug-23-12  rilkefan: Odd that black didn't play 30...Qe8 heading for the repetition against a much higher rated opponent. Maybe those ratings aren't accurate. Or Bellaiche needed a win for a norm or a tournament result.

  Sneaky: <ChessMystery> I think there's a little bit of counterplay in 22.Qg4+ Qg5 23.Qxd4 Bc6.
Aug-23-12  Abdel Irada: <The Last Straw: Black apprently made the mistake of apparently not connecting his pawns.>

Yes, but only apparently.

Aug-23-12  Gogia: i would have played 9...Qxc3+
Aug-23-12  nolanryan: black lost on purpose. fixed game
Aug-23-12  kevin86: Black had the two connectors, but white earned his own and won with them.

BTW,Bally Ache,the 1960 KY. Derby Winner,died with a belly ache.

Aug-23-12  erniecohen: I cannot believe that an IM lost this endgame.
Aug-23-12  SuperPatzer77: <The Last Straw: At the end the b4-♙ is going to drop: 59…♖g4 60.♖xb4! . Unless black plays 59…b3?!? which in case white replies 60.xa3 or if black shifts his rook somewhere on the back rank then white obviously plays 60.♕g8+. :-) >

<The Last Straw> Yeah, it is 59...♖g4 , 60. ♖xb4! a2, 61. ♔e6! (setting up the mating net) --> see below:

a) 61...♖e4+, 62. ♖xe4 a1=♕, 63. g8=♕#

b) 61...♔d8, 62. ♖xg4! a1=♕, 63. g8=♕+ ♔c7, 64. ♕g7+ (forcing the queen trade) ♕xg7, 65. ♖xg7+

Nice endgame combination by Pentala Harikrishna!!

Aug-23-12  TheTamale: The pun is made on Black's last name, but really, White's surname here is of surpassing quality.

Indeed it is. In fact, I feel a growing impulse to don saffron robes, wander about the nearest airport, and chant it at unsuspecting travelers.
