GrahamClayton: Nice King hunt and mating attack by West - the self-imprisonment of his King by 19...Bb2 is an unusual feature.
Jan-09-24  Saniyat24: Ermenkov was 41 years old when this game was played, so not so young...but the White King was lost in a dark forest, so the pun makes sense...!
Jan-09-24  eaglewing: Would 18. Rhd1 have saved a draw? Black has a perpetual but does Black have more?
Jan-09-24  catlover: The wild West.

Teyss: Good game, ok pun... apart from the fact the not-so-young man's King goes East.

Surprising this pun was never used before and indeed there only was a slightly different one: M Sixtensson vs G West, 1986 ... where the action also occurs Eastward. Must be a curse on Guy West whose games are played on the Kside. Just remember that if ever he is your opponent.

18.Rxb7? was a mistake giving the d column to the BR. SF gives 18.Re1 or Rf1 (or probably anything) with equality. If then 18.Re1 Qa1+ 19.Kd2 Bc3+ 20.Kd3 (not Ke3? Bxe1 21.Qxe1 or Nxe1 Re8+), Black has nothing better than 20...Qxa2 21.Qe7 Bxe1 22.Nxe1.

White has N for 3 Ps and his K is exposed but his pieces are more active (+1.1 at 32 ply).

offramp: Years ago, strong players went east to play in east European tournaments, like this one in Hungary.

Guy West had to go west to go to the east.

Jan-09-24  goodevans: <eaglewing: Would 18. Rhd1 have saved a draw?>

That R move blocks d1 and allows 18...Qb2+ 19.Kd2 Bc3+ and whichever square the K moves to Black will skewer White's Q. The idea is right, though, but the R needs to go to e1 or f1 as per <Teyss>'s post.

I wouldn't even have got that far. I'd have played <16.Bd2?> but that runs into 16...Qxa2 17.Bxc3 Bh6+ with mate to follow.

  Teyss: Hi goodevans,
Well spotted as usual. 18.Rhd1? Qb2+ 19.Kd2 Bc3+ 20.Ke3 Re8+ or 20.Kd3 Qb5+, both winning the WQ.

The h1 R has to move because of the skewer 18...Qa1+. In e1 it protects the WQ against 20.Qb5+, in f1 it doesn't but is protected: 18.Rf1 Qb2+ 19.Kd1 (not Kd2? as above) and apparently Black has nothing better than perpetual.

Note 18.Rg1? protected by the N loses because of 18...g4.

Lesson: if your King is exposed, don't try to counter a check (Qa1+) with a piece (Rb1), just leave it squares to move around (d1) and keep columns closed (R on d7).
