Feb-14-14 | | FairyPromotion: Awesome pun indeed! Literally made me laugh out loud. The fact that it's Valentine's day, makes it that much funnier. Kudos to whoever came up with it! :) |

Feb-14-14 | | dusk: http://weknowmemes.com/wp-content/u... Seemed very familiar. |

Feb-14-14 | | TrueFiendish: Bravo on the pun, you devils! |

Feb-14-14 | | hedgeh0g: <FSR: <hedgeh0g: <FSR> Or just play 9...c6, ...Qc7, ...h6, etc. Doesn't look like much for White.> That is also fine. And once Black gets in ...h6 and ...Qc7, if White's bishop has retreated to h4, White has to worry about ...g5 winning a pawn.> Yeah, that's the idea. Without it, Black will struggle somewhat with the development of his queenside. I briefly considered the possibility that White might try a pawn sacrifice to open the f-file, but besides the immediate ...Qxg3, Black would also have ...Nh5!, with a good game. Great pun and a lovely finish, by the way. |

Feb-14-14 | | Garech: Best pun of the year, for sure.

Feb-14-14 | | Hevelius: The pun is sooo hilarious, I must say! Brilliant... |

 | | FSR: Hilarious mate, albeit not for Ivanchuk, I suppose. It is reminiscent of a way that one can theoretically mate in king and two knights versus king: click for larger view It never actually happens. Even in two knights versus pawn endings where the knights win, the king always gets mated in a corner. Endgame Explorer: NN vs P |

Feb-14-14 | | goodevans: An excellent pun and a new entry for my <find the worst move> collection to boot. What could be better? |
|
Feb-14-14 | | mucher1: I remember the song, but am not sure I really understand the pun!? Perhaps I'm just not hip to the most current lingo... |

Feb-14-14
 | | OhioChessFan: I can't decide if it's a great pun or too forced to be good at all. |
|
Feb-14-14 | | paavoh: Took a while to realize that the unusual hyphenation "Vlad-is-lav" rhymes with "what is love". Best pun so far this year! Would the "guilty" person please report him/herself? |
|
Feb-14-14
 | | OhioChessFan: On a related note, after many years, I'm ashamed to admit I just figured out the pun in goodevans' name. |
|
Feb-14-14 | | kevin86: unique 2 knight mate. |
|
Feb-14-14 | | thegoldenband: Great pun!
<FSR: It never actually happens> I'm sure there has to be a study that ends that way, though. Just off the top of my head: click for larger viewNo idea whether 1. Qxf8+! is the fastest path to mate, but it's one of the flashiest. Swapping the bishop for a knight and putting the white King on h7 would be another flavor. |

 | | Sneaky: Best. Pun. Ever. |
|
Feb-14-14 | | morfishine: <Sneaky> Pardon my ignorance, I even listened to the song and don't get it. I guess since I'm from the CCR and Pink Floyd era, this is just not on my radar In any case, my two favorites are 'Control Ault Delete' and 'Napoleon Blown Apart' unless I can be convinced otherwise ***** |

 | | SwitchingQuylthulg: <morfishine: In any case, my two favorites are 'Control Ault Delete' and 'Napoleon Blown Apart' unless I can be convinced otherwise> 'Napoleon Blown Apart' has never been used as a GotD pun, though <Napoleon Torn Apart> was used in 2008 and <Zapoleon Blown Apart> in 2012.
Of course, the pun itself has been around for much longer and isn't original to Chessgames to put it mildly. |

Feb-14-14 | | Gilmoy: The mate is structurally a Boden (or should we say Odenn :). Lemma: An N acts as a "short B" of range 2 on a perpendicular diagonal. For example, the Nd6 plays the role of a hypothetical Bg6, to cover f7-e8. (And by symmetry, the Ng6 plays the role of a Bd6, so in this case you could replace the NN with BB and get the same mate.) Hence, NN can achieve criss-cross coverage of at most a 4x4 zone around the king. You can't mate a K in the corner like this because one N would be off the board. (N.B. <haha> BB can't do it either.) So Boden almost always happens on the edge of the board, where the K has a 3x2 zone but 2 squares are self-blocked by friendly units. Corollary: Castling always achieves one self-block. Having an intact f or c-pawn is the other self-block. Beware Boden after castling! (and you thought it gave K safety, tsk) Corollary: Boden can happen in the center, if you add an R or Q to take away the extra 1x3 or 3x1 free zone. Equivalently, the "edge of board" acts as a <virtual R>, but you can drag the entire pattern centerward, which morphs it into a real R, like Hawking radiation. Even in blitz, you gotta wonder if Ivanchuk decided that N vs N+P was hopeless, and deliberately played <38..Bg8> as a way of resigning. |

Feb-14-14 | | dfcx: <Zhbugnoimt: what does the pun even mean?> Vladislav = "What is love".

|
Feb-14-14 | | master of defence: If I'm not mistaken, this pun refers to the music What is love by Haddaway. Interesting to note that 'Vladislav' has approximately the same pronounce that 'What is love'. One of the best Puns i've ever saw on chessgames.com, and the music is very good as well. I've searching this for some time since a part of it appeared in another video on youtube. Congratulations to the POTD creator! ;-) |

I guess since I'm from the CCR and Pink Floyd era, this is just not on my radar> I'm from the CCR and Pink Floyd era too. What you don't get is that it's funny not because the song is good, but because it's so utterly forgettable. Just like that Rick Astley song that also had an internet renaissance. |
