  fredthebear: In the final position, White has three units trained upon the e8 mating square occupied by the Black rook. Black's dark-squared Be7 is pinned, so the bishop dare not capture the White knight. The White knight intends to capture the Black rook. If the Black rook moves, it no longer defends the dark-squared bishop. One Black piece or the other is lost.

Also note that the Black queen is responsible for defending the e5-square to prevent a diagonal check by the White queen (after the White knight captures the rook). The Black queen is not eager to leave the b8-h2 diagonal.

There's no way for Black to fix such problems. Nc6 helps protect the bishop and the e5-square, but not the back rank.
