GrahamClayton: Fox received a gold medal and much acclaim for his 28 move combination starting with 32...♗a6.

However, Emanual Lasker said that a simpler win was possible with 32...♕d6, threatening 33...♖h2+ and 34...♖h5#.

  whittaker: Crafty also likes 32 ... Qd6, saying White then has nothing better than giving up the g3 Knight with 33. h3 Rxg3 34. Re1 Rg8 -2.28

After the game move 32. ... Ba6, Crafty says White keeps a slight edge with 33. Nge2 Qe8 34. Qe1 Qh5 35. Rh3 Qg4 36. Rg3 Qh5 37. h3 Rxf5 38. Ng1 Re5 39. Qd2 Rg6 40. Rxg6 hxg6 41. Nf3 Be3 42. Qe1 Re8 +0.39

And here White can also win a piece with 33 Qxa6, but this leads to a draw by perpetual check: 33. Qxa6 Rxh2+ 34. Kxh2 Qh6+ 35. Nh5 Rxh5+ 36. Rh3 Qf4+ 37. Kh1 Rxh3+ 38. gxh3 Qf3+ 39. Kh2 Qf2+ 40. Kh1 Qf3+

“28 move combination”? Is that a typo or am I missing something?

In any case it seems rather generous considering it relies on a fairly hefty blunder.

FSR: Seems like Lawrence was the one on the run here. And unlike Papa (M Papa vs J LeBon, 1987), his run didn't last long and he didn't survive it.

perfidious: You, you, you talk about just every band

But the names you drop are second hand

I've heard it all before

Nov-11-22  Andrew Chapman: At move 15 I was thinking that if it was me, I would probably play Qg3 and get the queens off the board. That open g file looked menacing.

FSR: <Andrew Chapman> I agree. Looking at that position, White's never going to mate Black, but it's very easy to imagine Black mating off White. As he in fact did.
