Feb-03-09 | | swarmoflocusts: "it's a rule of the match. no resignations or draw offers. every game goes to mate, stalemate, 50 move rule, whatever." I find this to be an absurd set of conditions for a match. A resignation is simply a way of showing respect for one's opponent (or mercy for oneself) -- what, do they think Karpov can't win this endgame? The banning of draws is understandable (who knows how half the games that are agreed draws would have ended, had they been played out), but resignations? That's absurd. I understand that that's sort of the point of the match ("The Mate of the King"), but it pisses me off. |

 | | Domdaniel: A nice game by Ana Karpov. Is she related to former world champion Anatoly? |
|
Feb-06-09 | | Everett: <Domdaniel> This is Anatoly. |
|
Feb-08-09
 | | Domdaniel: <Everett> Thank you, but I was making a very weak attempt at a joke. An embarrasingly bad one, now I look at it again. Strangely, though: you and I both spelled his name 'Anatoly' - the usual transcription from cyrillic. But the scoresheet here has 'Ana' and the caption over the board has 'Anatoli'. And his friends call him Tolya. Korchnoi once compared him to a fish, saying that 'Karpov' meant 'of carp'. That's nearly as bad as my joke, but I guess old Vik had an excuse. |
|
Feb-09-09
 | | alexmagnus: Well, "Karpov" really means "of carp". There was a joke in the USSR in 1986: "After the World championship Match the Central Comitee decided to rename the Karpovka river to Kasparovka" (the Karpovka river is named after carps). |
|
Feb-09-09
 | | Domdaniel: <alexmagnus> I suppose I could say that you were just *carping* ... but I won't, since your information is very interesting. Thanks. <Arma Carpumque Cano>, as Virgil's Latin report on the 1974 match might have begun: I sing of carp and the man ... I guess a group (fleet? swarm? school?) of the creatures would be a *Polycarp* ... |

Feb-25-09 | | Andrijadj: Playing this stuff against Karpov is suicidal,no matter Karpov is past his prime... |

I think that the reason why the "play until mate' rule was used for this match is because inexperienced players or casual fans can clearly tell who has won the game. They may not have the knowledge to understand why a game is drawn, or why one player resigned before being mated. |
