plang: Leko had played 17 Bc2 against Adams at Madrid 1998 and the game had been a short draw. In his preparation Svidler had, surprisingly, not considered 17..g5!?. Since 19 Rh5 would have been answered by 19..Qg6 Svidler sacrificed the exchange with 19 Ne4. There was a 1994 Hungarian game Valko-Egri where Black had played 20..Qh3; Svidler felt that Adam's 20..Qg6 was better. Adams offered a draw with 27..c5 but Svidler, after consulting with his Team's Captain, chose to play on. The position remained unclear until Adam's time trouble error 29..Bxe4?; 29..c4 would have kept him in the game. Svidler did not fall for 34 exd..Rxe1+ 35 Qxe1..Qxc2 36 Qe7+..Kg6 37 Qxd8..Qd1+ with a perpetual. Adams lost on time but after 40 Bc3 his game would have been quite lost.
