May-10-16  AlicesKnight: Not easy to see when Black saw the figure in the marble of the passed pawn suddenly becoming the winning factor. Perhaps White overlooked that the exchanges facilitated it. Expert texpert...
May-10-16  TheBish: Aren't the best puns also the worst? I see that <An Englishman> has beat me to the punch on stating that observation. As did <FSR> in coming up with this pun in the first place. Okay, I haven't seen the game yet (hope it lives up to the pun) but if I had, and noticed those names, I would have surely put it together for the perfect, cringe-worthy pun... I hope... not sure if I would have caught it. But I have to admit, I am a little jealous! ;)
May-10-16  pedro99: Sometimes I think they select these for the puns rather than the quality of the game. Just a thought.

mjmorri: <al wazir: I wondered at the time why black played 22...Rg8 instead of Re8 (to defend the ♙ under attack) or Rf8 (to back the ♙ trying to advance). Now I understand.>

You would think that move (Rg8) would have triggered a red flag in White's mind.

May-10-16  YetAnotherAmateur: It looks to me like white's key mistake was 12. Na3, effectively putting that knight out of play for the rest of the game, rather than 12. Nc3.

FSR: Amazingly, there is a third game between a Wall and a Russell, though in that case Russell is a last name. D Russell vs T Wall, 1996 "The Wall" won all three games.

AylerKupp: So apparently one way to win games is to change your last name to "Wall".
May-10-16  YetAnotherAmateur: One other thought about that a3 knight: While we know from that game that 25. Re1 doesn't solve any problems, 25. Nc2 followed by Ne3 would at least cover the queening square and activate the otherwise dead piece.
May-10-16  AvidChessMan: The only reason I can see for 12. Na3, is to cover the bishop at c4 and neutralize the black bishop at e6. 12. Nc3 would have freed up the b4 square to the black knight. Instead of 17.Rde1, I like 17.b3 and then Kb2.

Domdaniel: Coo coo ca choo. I kinda like the pun, I'm afraid. But then I've also lost a couple of games to Gavin Wall, both in the French Advance. Not at all a bad player.

Domdaniel: <AylerKupp> -- < So apparently one way to win games is to change your last name to "Wall".> Which morphs to "Well apparently one way to win games is to change your last name to 'So'".

And this is Mr and Mrs Wall-Carpet and their son Walter ...

Are you a pole vaulter?

Nein, I am German, but how did you my name know?

works for me, along with all the other off-the-Wall remarks. But I don't plan on any trips to the Mexican border soon.

May-10-16  morfishine: The only way this pun works is if the game was a Berlin Wall...otherwise it conveniently fits into the rather simple category of rudimentary 'play-on-word'

just for the record

Commendable prudence.

Ciudad Juarez in particular is not my idea of a day trip--I like those which afford decent prospects of getting back with a whole skin!

A road only too oft-travelled down Juarez way.

Way I hear it, former hot spot Acapulco is going the same route, also courtesy of DruggiesRUs.

perfidious: <Dom> My preference, much as I loathe the Berlin Wall of top GM praxis, would be for that over the Trump version.

Domdaniel: <perf> We are in agreement, then. I think the Berlin (Ruy Lopez) is an abomination - though I'm not likely to meet it as I don't play either 1.e4 or 1...e5.

As for the Trump version, I think he's also an absurdity... but I won't have to live in his turf, if the worst happens. You will have my sympathy.
