Kibitzer's Corner
Jan-25-08  Eyal: Apparently it wasn't such a bright idea by Van Wely to try and turn Aronian's own weapon against him... (Gelfand vs Aronian, 2008) - Aronian was very well-prepared to play both sides of this line.
Jan-25-08  Resignation Trap: Aronian vs. Aronian! The first 14 moves of this game are the same as Gelfand vs Aronian, 2008 from round two, where Aronian was Black! In the press conference video, http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KIe3... , he mentions in passing that his 15.Rb1 is one of seven or eight possible moves for White. Van Wely must have had something prepared.

His combination with 24.Rxc6! and 26.Nd6+! took me by surprise when I saw them.

26.Nd6+! is a beautiful shot by Aronian which wins material by force, since the black queen can't keep defending both d5 and b5. Relatively better for Black was 25...Qb7 which also keeps an eye on both squares (as well as f7) without allowing White this combination, but earlier Black should probably have played 22...0-0 instead of letting his king get stuck in the center like that.

Jan-27-08  micartouse: Geez, what a thrashing.
