  Stonehenge: You're absolutely right.
Jan-23-08  cade: The final position reminds me of a famous Nigel Short win - Short vs Gelfand, 1991

This game is the baby version.

Jan-23-08  dumbgai: What is Spoelman doing, playing in Corus B? He's clearly way outclassed. I'm not sure he'd survive in the C group either.
Jan-23-08  sitzkrieg: Unfortunately the corussite is not accessible at the moment but it is practice to promote the winner of group c to b the next year. Maybe he won group c 2007?
Jan-23-08  cade: Corus Group C (2007)

Spoelman finished 5th in Corus C 2007. However you can see that 4 of the top 6 were promoted to Corus B this year.

Jan-23-08  sitzkrieg: ah..well maybe a bit optimistic then, still a great chanche for Spoelman and the organizers have every right to invite some dutch players. Besides, some difference in class is good for a tournament imo. Maybe Spoelman can play in group A next year, think about the impact it would have on the number of short draws/boring games!;)
Jan-24-08  dumbgai: Of course they have the right to invite Dutch players, but this field already has Stellwagen, Smeets and L'Ami. It's good that they're letting some local talent to test their skills against world-class GMs, but don't you think inviting an IM in place of a 2650-rated GM diminishes the quality of chess played? It's not like he dominated the C group like Carlsen did that one year.
Jan-24-08  tarek1: <Horrible Endgame play by White!!..>

The appearances are deceptive here :
this endgame is VERY complex and much harder to play correctly for White than it seems at first sight.
