Jul-24-07 | | Karpova: This game will please the advocats of the French defense. |
Jul-24-07 | | argishti: sooo, 4th loss?? wow. |
Jul-24-07 | | gmgomes: Chucky is playing like the Devil; I wonder if he could beat Aronian, Kramnik and Anand if he were playing in Mexico. |
Jul-24-07 | | gmgomes: WOW!
Vassily Ivanchuk beat Nigel Short 13 to 1, with 16 draws |
Jul-24-07 | | jon01: Ivanchuk is a very difficult opponent for Short. |
Jul-24-07 | | savagerules: I wonder if Short has ever considered switching to draughts (checkers). Kind of like when a football player retires and starts playing golf. |
Jul-25-07 | | pacelli: If you're gonna have a 'super-GM' tournament the invitations shld be restricted to super-GMs, not has-beens or in some cases: never-even-weres. |
Jul-25-07 | | the bad bishop: Gee .... <a has been or never was> who was ranked No. 4 on the world and is still rated 2650+. Obviously <pacelli> you have a very balanced view of Short's ability and your insightful comments are no doubt of immeasurable benefit to any one seeking to learn something more about chess. Just out of interest - are you good at anything other than taking cheap shots? |

 | | Octavia: <This game will please the advocats of the French defense.> it wasn't the opening that lost the game, more like the endgame. |
Jul-25-07 | | pacelli: <the bad bishop> Perhaps I am being biased but I feel I have the right to be. Mr Short has caused a terrible inconvenience to me before. |
Jul-25-07 | | shakh.i.shekh: Did Ivanchuk play a sound opening? It seems to me that after Black's 10th move he is clearly behind in development. |
Jul-26-07 | | Gilmoy: Black looks OK, even after 10. White has a "lead", but its Bc4 is loose, which counts almost as 1 tempo for Black. 10..a6 prevents Bb5+, and 11..Qc7 attacks the B with tempo. After 12.Qe2 Bd6, they're still tied in development, but White's Bd2 results in some congestion, whereas Black fianchettos, and uses his elbow room at d7 to double his Rs. Black's Q ends up on the better square -- she stays on the c7-h2 diagonal from move 11 until 35.Qxh3+ (which wins the game). Contrast to White's Q, which scurries around but never finds a threat. For this pawn structure, Qc7 had long-term offensive threats, Qe2 was mostly defensive. Credit Ivanchuk for steering the game to cash in on his more-active Q. |

Jul-26-07 | | shakh.i.shekh: Thank you for your analysis. It was quite helpful. |
Jul-27-07 | | NguyenVo: I think White might have been caught offguard in the opening (unless 11.a4 was a planned novelty). The mainline is 11.Bb3 which does lead to a small developmental advantage for White I believe. |
Jul-28-07 | | Jim Bartle: Short may or not be a "has-been," but nobody who ever defeated Gelfand, Karpov and Timman in consecutive candidates matches can be called a "never-was." |
Jul-29-07 | | Mikhal: Whats going on after 47Kd4?? |
Jul-29-07 | | BlackNightmare: <savagerules: I wonder if Short has ever considered switching to draughts (checkers). Kind of like when a football player retires and starts playing golf> OR FOR THE Los Angeles Galaxy |
Jul-30-07 | | Jim Bartle: That second option seems to pay a lot better... |
Jul-31-07 | | Gnappo: Interesting game. Ivanchuck has the initiative after 23.Axd6?! (23.Be5 Qc6 24.Rxd7 Rxd7 and Short can play b4 with equal position). The losing move is 34.Bf3? (34.Ke1 Qd6 35.Qxd6 Bxd6 - small advantage for Black I think, but not easy to convert in a win) Elegant the finish 42....Qg1! with sacrifice of the Bishop. <Mikhal> after 47.Kd4 Qd2 and the Knight in d3 falls. |
