Kibitzer's Corner
Jun-21-07  arnaud1959: I just tried to find the win without board or computer. I cannot find a win besides 30.Kd1 Nac3+ 31.Qxc3 Nxc3+ 32.Kd2 N+ and Black can find a way to play Qxg7 followed by Rxc4 with big material advantage. But I don't see why Shirov resigned so early.
Jun-21-07  Marmot PFL: There were several games with this line in the opening explorer and I think white won them all after 18.Bh4. I wounder what Van Wely had prepared against this.
Jun-21-07  Karpova: <arnaud1959>
30.Kd1 Nac3+ 31.Qxc3 Nxc3+ 32.Kd2 Nb1+ 33.Ke3 or anything else and black will manage to play Qxc2+ (i.e. 33.Ke3 Qc3+ 34.Ke2 Qxc2+) and then black plays Qxh7 takes on g8 and black is up a whole rook.

Better is:
30.Kd1 Nac3+ 31.Qxc3 Qb1+ 32.Ke2 Nxc3+ 33.Kf3 Qd1+ 34.Kg3 Qg1+ 35.Kf3 Rxc4 and white can't avoid checkmate

Jun-22-07  PaulKeres: poor game from Shirov!

Bobsterman3000: Maybe Shirov should only play d4 against Van Wely.
