Kibitzer's Corner
Mar-19-07  ianD: Not just a Knight fork but also a smothered mate.
Mar-19-07  nikolajewitsch: Yes, although the mate is not forced, but Aronian would have to give up his queen not just the exchange. Blindfold is fun!

Peligroso Patzer: Did you guys know something when you selected today's puzzle ( S Duron vs V Garcia-Castro, 2004 , position after 19. Kh1)? Philidor's Legacy is rarely seen in high-level play, but first it is featured in today's puzzle, and then we get this miniature from Gelfand.

Peligroso Patzer: By the way, if you ever want to use this as your Game of the Day, I have a pun to suggest: "He Never Saw it Coming".
Mar-19-07  Dres1: damn... Aronian got stomped.
Mar-19-07  russep: Nice game by Gelfand
Mar-20-07  dabearsrock1010: smothered mate is awesome, i did it once against a friend who would probably be rated something like 400 USCF, but I felt really proud of myself. the only move to save mate for black is Rf8, but down goes the queen.
Mar-29-07  gambitfan: a very nice <smothered mate> !
