Kibitzer's Corner
Oct-15-06  The King Returns1: This is a sad ending for black. If 39..Nc3, then 40 Ra8+, and it's over. Oops!

Mateo: A very good positional game and a nice tactical finish for Shirov in an old line. Until move 12, it was the same than Walbrodt vs Maroczy, 1896 1/2-1/2! Walbrodt played 12. Be2.

24...Nxd4? 25.Rxc8 Nxe2 26.Rc7 Nxf4+ 27.Kg3 wins for White.

27...f5?! seems doubtful. The only advantage of this weakening move is that Black gets the e4 square for the Knight. But when the Knight goes to e4, the White Bishop can go to b5 and then a White Knight to d3. Then the b4 pawn cannot be defended.

34.Ne5! was accurate. If 34...Nxa2 35. Nxc6 Nxc1 36. Ne5! Rc8 37. Rxc8 Bxc8 (the Bishop cannot move) 38. Nh3 ! Nxb3 39. g6!, White invades with his Knight and wins.

If 35...Be8 36. Nfd3 Rb6 37. Nxb4 Nxa4 38. Rc8! Rxc8 39. Rxc8 Kf8 40. g6 wins.

36.a5! was beautiful. The point is to impede a Black piece to get the b5 square.

If 37...Na2 38. Rc8+! White mates. If 37...Ra8 38. Nxb4 Ne4 39. Rc7 Rd8 40.Nc6 Bxc6 41. Rg7+ Kf8 42. g6!, White wins.
