Kibitzer's Corner
Jan-20-06  notyetagm: The position in this game after 31 ♔f4?? is The Times Winning Move for Friday, January 20, 2006.

Black To Play: 31 ... ?

White's problem is that his king is now in a mating net. Black has a forced mate in five moves with 31 ... g5+! 32 ♔e4 ♘g3+ 33 ♔e3/d4 ♘f5+ 34 ♔e4 ♖c4+ 35 ♖d4 ♖xd4#.

I failed to solve this problem correctly because I did not cosider 32 ... ♘g3+ after 31 ... g5+! 32 ♔e4. I know better than that. I continued with 32 ... ♖c4+ 33 ♖d4 ♗f5+ 34 ♔xf5 ♖xd4 winning the exchange using the <remove the guard> tactic but I think the resulting endgame is unclear since White has a much more active king and the two bishops for the exchange and a pawn.
