Kibitzer's Corner
May-05-06  notyetagm: Bummer. Black played 17 ... ♕b4? in order to provoke White into playing 18 ♘c6!, a knight fork of the Black b4-queen and b8-rook. Black's point was that after 18 ... ♕c3?? he threatens both 19 ... ♕xc6 winning a piece and 19 ... ♕g3#.

Unfortunately for Black, White does not have to meet these threats after 18 ... ♕c3??. Instead he can use his active c6-knight, mobile h1-rook and d1-queen, and the open h-file to play an <Anastasia mate>! Black threatens mate in one but White threatens mate with checks and its his move so he gets his in first!

After 18 ... ♕c3??, White forces the <Anastasia mate> with 19 ♘e7+ ♔h8 20 ♖xh7+! ♔xh7 21 ♕h5#.

You have got to know your basic mating patterns cold. Knowing this pattern cold gave Nogueiras and cost Todorovic a full point.

May-05-06  notyetagm: The open h-file to your king bites you in the ass every time.
Jul-17-09  Dillon: yea, open h files are fun. what a nice sac.
