IMlday: Brilliant chess imo. 7..h5!? is an interesting new move. I'd played 7..Nh5 8.Ng3 Nf4 as early as 1969 against Ray Kerr in the Canadian Championship~the idea comes from Petrosian~ but 7..h5 improves. White's 13.Na4?! looks weak. There are no entry squares on the opened b-file. Maybe 13.Bc2!? intending N/e2-c1-d3 would contest the c5&e5 squares? 13.bxc5 was also possible. After conceding the e5-square to Black with f3-f4, White is worse (the f7-square is easily defended). Black over-protects the e5-square, normalizes his position and then goes on the attack on the Kingside, culminating in the powerful piece sacrifice. Very nice game!
Feb-26-06  EmperorAtahualpa: Aronian's only Benoni defense game in the database!

Was he running an experiment against a relatively weaker player?

Here is a later game against a much stronger opponent in which Aronian again employs the <Czech Benoni> system: Gelfand vs Aronian, 2006

May-22-12  DiscoJew: I agree Lawrence, really nice benoni from black, these h5 ideas are the interesting stuff now a days.
May-22-12  Shams: I don't have a source or a link, but I remember Aronian was asked recently how "loose" he allowed himself to be with the openings. He said basically, "something like the Czech Benoni is as far as I'll go, and that only rarely."
