Jul-01-05  MoonlitKnight: 26.Rxb6+ should be 26.Rxc7+.
Jul-02-05  Gowe: what's the difference?
Jul-02-05  Montreal1666: The difference is with 26.Rxb6+

26...axR looks like a clear win for black.

<MoonlitKnight:> on the official site still says: 26.Rxb6+

Jul-02-05  Montreal1666: What is the first new move in this game?
Jul-02-05  hintza: 14.g4
Jul-02-05  iron maiden: I remember the relay first gave 26. Rxb6+, which is probably where the error comes from.
Jul-04-05  Gowe: I see now. But, oh my, how could Peter nielsen didn't see this move. He has only two possible moves. I declare myself in shock. How? How? 2653!? HOW?

tamar: <Gowe> Transmission error. 26 Rxc7+ was played.
Jul-04-05  Montreal1666: <tamar:> There is no *Transmission* error in the Euro-Championship website. Here is the game there:

http://www.eurochamp.pl/cb/99/base....

They haven't changed the move there.

tamar: <Montreal1666> I was watching at the time. 26 Rxb6+ appeared on the screen, then there was brief period where it was removed. Then the position with the Black King on c6 appeared, with the White Rook on e7.

All signs point to a transmission error. 26 Rxb6+ is nonsensical, but transposes into the game position, so no one at the site would become aware that the moves were bad.

Jul-04-05  Montreal1666: Sure, but 1st of all someone should inform them to correct it (for example Magnus). Secondly, *transmission* error applies to somewhere like ICC not where the games were being played.

Mateo: Obviously Carlsen played 26. Rc7, because 26. Rb6 cannot be, as 26... ab wins easily for Black.

After 22... Kb7, there is a forced variation leading to a 4 vs 3 Rook ending. So 22... Kd7 should be better. For instance 23. Bg7 fg 24. hg Nd4.

Feb-23-19  Shamboozle: and now he's the reigning champ. i'm enjoying these old games
