Feb-23-12  Garech: How does Steinitz get away with these king manouevres!!

-Garech

Feb-23-12  reilouco: Steinitz got away because his opponent let the win escape SEVERAL times. For example, at move 22.Qd2, Houdini gives the game as won for black and recommends 22... Re7.

And again at move 27, black misses the simple 27.... Rd8+.

And at move 32, black blunders and there is no chance of winning anymore.

Apr-09-22  areknames: This game must have been veeery casual because it doesn't make sense that Sich plays in such a positional, surprisingly modern way only to miss the crushing 27...Rd8+ and all the other winning moves he had at his disposal until he even throws away the draw and gets mated quickly. Good pun, but this looks like blitz anno 1871.

DaltriDiluvi: The pun reminded me of the book "The Sickness unto Death" by Danish philosopher Søren Kierkegaard.
Apr-09-22  Brenin: <DaltriDiluvi: The pun reminded me of the book "The Sickness unto Death" by Danish philosopher Søren Kierkegaard.> I assumed that that was the point of the pun, reflecting Black's existential despair at throwing away a win against such an eminent opponent.

Sally Simpson: I spotted a horse running today called Colonel Mustard. (Cluedo - Miss Scarlett and she has punned today's GOTD! This is a sure sign from above.) so I dropped £2 e/way on it at 14-1. It came in fifth and it's all her fault.

Game of the Day? Huh!

Only chosen as GOTD so we can all see the smart alec pun. More pathetic posturing.

Have put £2.00 e/way on Poker Party in the Grand National (Poker reminds me of Perfidious... this is a sure sign from above!)

If this does not come in then he will get flamed as well.

Apr-09-22  AlicesKnight: The missed opportunities of Black suggests that 'a Sich in time saves Stein(itz)'.

Sally Simpson: Poker Party gave up before jumping the 27th fence.

Wife backed winner and son got a good e/way pay out for 2nd. I got nowt.

Good pun Alice.
