al wazir: Hard to believe Steinitz played a game this badly. Maybe it was a simul?
Sep-27-07  RookFile: You haven't been playing over Steinitz's games. You should have no problem coming up with a dozen examples of Steinitz similarly getting slapped around in something like an Evans Gambit, King's Gambit, or Scotch Game.

Steinitz simply was not a good defender in positions like this.

fredthebear: Natural moves in this opening line can vary to and fro dramatically. For example, 7...Na5? 8.Qa4+ etc. is +2.83 (35 ply). If Black does not adhere to theory, s/he can get butchered.

In this casual game with 9...Na5, 10...NxBc4 was necessary, and Black is better. Allowing 11.Bxf7+ is all but lost for Black.

"The extent of Steinitz’s dominance in world chess is evident from the fact that from 1866, when he beat Adolf Anderssen, to 1894, when he relinquished the world crown to Emanuel Lasker, Steinitz won all his matches, sometimes by wide margins. " -- CG.com biography page

Jan-26-22  Granny O Doul: It starts off like a composed game and then declines into dreary reality.
