Nov-25-06  Everett: I wonder if Marin included this game in his book on defense.

plang: In the draw Ehlvest-Renet Clermond-Ferrand 1989 White played 14 Nh4; 14 Ng1 was new. 20 Rxf6!? was an interesting exchange sacrifice giving White a dominating knight on d5. 20..Qd8 was forced as 20..Kg7? 21 Nef4! would have been catastrophic for Black. 25 g4?! was a positional error limiting the scope of the g2 bishop; better was 25 Qxh6..f5 26 Qd2 with full compensation for the exchange. 38 Qf3? allowed Black to return the exchange under favorable circumstances; better was 38 Rc1 maintaining an unclear position. After the pawn sacrifice 43..e4! Black developed mating threats which combined with his passed b-pawn was decisive. A quicker win was 58..Qh2+ 59 Kf1..Bxf2 60 Qxf2..Qh1+ 61 Qg1..Qxe4!.
